Many associated with Celtic were recently frustrated after hearing former Hoops attacker Charlie Nicholas criticise their transfer window.
The pundit spoke about their signings and said he believes that manager Neil Lennon will be “annoyed” by the acquisitions and is “putting on a brave face” as the international window shut earlier this week.
It seems like this is not the case however, and Lennon has criticised the former Sky Sports pundit following his latest comments.
Speaking via FourFourTwo, Lennon said, “How would Charlie know the dealing we have with AC Milan?
“Listen, if we were to sign (Lionel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo, Charlie still would have found fault with it. He’s been negative about the club for years.
“We’ve kept all our best players…all these players who are big assets to the club. And that’s been a difficult thing to do. We’ve also added international quality in players who have bedded in straight away.
“I could go on and on about the players that we signed and I’m thrilled to get Laxalt over the line as well. So, Charlie doesn’t speak for me, he doesn’t think for me, and to be honest with you, it doesn’t resonate one bit here.”
The manager of the Hoops definitely has a point as players like Edouard and Ajer were linked to big moves in Europe. Sides like Real Madrid, Manchester City and Leicester City were interested in Ajer, whilst Arsenal were one of the reported sides interested in Edouard.
Therefore to still have them following these reports is a huge morale boost for all associated with the club. Meanwhile a fair few of the signings they have made have had great starts to their careers at the Hoops.
Centre-back Shane Duffy, who is on loan from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, has been solid at the back as he has been a part of four clean sheets in his seven appearances, per Transfermarkt. The 28 year-old has also been a threat at the other end of the pitch, scoring two goals in his five Scottish Premiership matches.
Another of their summer signings who is shining so far in the SPFL is Albian Ajeti. The 23 year-old striker signed from West Ham United, per Transfermarkt. He has played six times in the division, and scored five goals whilst picking up one assist, so he looks to be a very solid signing for the club.
The Hoops also picked up Diego Laxalt on transfer deadline day. He looks to be a very shrewd acquisition as the left-back comes with great experience domestically after playing in the Serie A. He also has international pedigree, featuring 24 times for Uruguay, per Transfermarkt.
Therefore Lennon is right to be frustrated at some of the criticism he has received. He looks to be rightfully happy with his squad, and supporters should be pleased by this.
