Celtic have suffered a potential blow as star striker Odsonne Edouard could be ruled out for the start of the 2021/22 campaign.
The 22-year-old became a record goalscorer with France at U21 level after his brace against Switzerland took his tally to 11 goals from just six games (TransferMarkt).
The positive press from France regarding his recent achievement could mean bad news for the Parkhead club. According to the Daily Record, Edouard, who Neil Lennon previously described as “talismanic” in his glowing review of the young Frenchman, is in line to be selected for the France U23s squad that will represent the nation at next summer’s Olympic Games.
The delayed event is set to take place in Tokyo between July 23rd and August 8th, which could cross paths with Celtic’s Champions League qualifying campaign.
Transfer Tavern take
This is disastrous news for Celtic. The Champions League is a competition that the Bhoys desperately want to be in and were disappointed not to make it this season.
To not have Edouard at their disposal will be devastating for Lennon and his team, who are looking to reach the elusive 10-in-a-row during the 2020/21 campaign.
His absence could be the deciding factor as to whether they reach the group stages or drop to the Europa League once more. Time will tell whether Edouard is selected and what sort of impact it will have on Celtic.
