Celtic put in a great performance on the opening weekend of the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season as they thrashed Hamilton Academical 5-1. Many players put in very good displays, and defender Christopher Jullien was one of them. We have taken a closer look at his performance in the latest edition of our Unsung Hero feature.
Odsonne Edouard rightfully received a lot of praise following the game as he scored a hat-trick, but Jullien was one player whose performance was not appreciated as much as it probably should have been.
The centre-back was outstanding, and the stats support this as he won both of his ground duels, as well as six of his aerial duels. He also made five clearances, one tackle and one interception, per SofaScore.
The 27 year-old perhaps surprisingly was also a threat for Celtic when attacking as he managed eight accurate long balls, made one key pass, hit the woodwork and also picked up an assist, per SofaScore. It was a very busy day for the Frenchman at both ends of the pitch and this highlights why he picked up a 7.8 rating, which was the second best on the pitch.
The £5.4 million valued ace, per Transfermarkt, who arrived at the Hoops from Toulouse in July 2019 has made 47 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and picking up three assists whilst also managing to keep 20 clean sheets. Performances like the one at the weekend highlight exactly why he has become such a crucial player for the club and the stats also emphasise how he is not just strengthening the defence, but also providing a threat in attack and it is a great asset to have in a defender.
He may not receive the same praise as some stars at the club like Edouard have but Jullien has proven that he is a vital cog in the Celtic side.
