Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has slammed talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy after he suggested that Celtic manager Neil Lennon should be sacked.
Agbonlahor leaps to Lennon’s defence
Cundy, who is a regular on talkSPORT’s The Sports Bar, described their performance as “gutless” and “spineless”, adding that Lennon “cannot survive after a performance like that”.
Agbonlahor took exception to this and told Football Insider that it is crazy to question Lennon after everything he has done for the Glasgow club.
“Ridiculous”, he said. “You can’t be saying that unless Rangers are joint on games and 10, 15 points ahead – then you can start saying that,” the former forward said. “The Scottish league can turn straight away, there are some tough teams in there, you look at Aberdeen or Kilmarnock, that you’re not guaranteed to just win (against) any more.
“There’s only a few points in it, you could say three points, so for Neil Lennon to be under pressure is ridiculous.”
“I’m not sure about Celtic but I’m sure neutrals would like it to be a bit more tighter (rather) than Celtic win every game and it being so easy.
Agbonlahor went on to say that Lennon is doing a good job with the Bhoys at Parkhead and that sleep shouldn’t be lost because of their recent tricky spell.
Transfer Tavern take
It is a tough time to be a Celtic supporter and this battle is something that they haven’t seen for many years. While they have struggled in Europe, their domestic campaign has always made up for that.
Cundy’s suggestion was correctly criticised by Agbonlahor and Lennon deserves much more respect than that.
Seasons in football are long and Celtic are going through a troublesome spell during the early stages of it. There is a long road ahead of them and Lennon should be given the opportunity to turn their fortunes around.
