Celtic: Scott Bain unlikely to play for club again

Scott Bain

Host of Celtic podcast The Celtic Exchange, Paddy, believes reserve goalkeeper Scott Bain is unlikely to play for the club again.

The Lowdown: Bain at Celtic

The 31-year-old shot-stopper has been at Parkhead since initially arriving in January 2018 on loan before making the switch permanent in the following summer after arriving from Dundee as an understudy to Craig Gordon and Dorus de Vries.

He’s since played backup to Fraser Forster and Joe Hart whilst featuring 23 times during the 2020/21 campaign alongside Greek keeper Vasilis Barkas before Hart’s arrival.

The Scotland international is under contract at Parkhead until 2024 after penning an extension in January 2022 with the SPFL champions (BBC).

The Latest: Paddy’s comments

Speaking on The Celtic Exchange in the build-up to their Scottish Cup clash against St Mirren on Saturday, Paddy claimed that he doesn’t expect to see Bain feature on the weekend or at all for Ange Postecoglou.

He said: “I think there’s a mutual agreement between Celtic and Scott Bain, I think Scott Bain is sound and enjoying his surroundings, I really do and that’s no disrespect to him.

“I don’t see him coming in, I don’t see him probably playing for us again, unless there were circumstances that he had to, I think he’s very comfortable in what has been because he still seems like a great character and then with the rest of the squad.”

The Verdict: Time up?

Time could be up for Bain at Parkhead, with him not featuring in a single game so far this season for the Bhoys, as well as only being named on the bench once in the opening 19 games of the season.

In fact, the last of his 74 appearances for Celtic came over a year ago in a 0-0 draw against St Mirren in the league on 22nd December 2021, which was the last time he featured under Postecoglou.

With the Aussie manager opting to field No 1 ‘keeper Joe Hart throughout the cup ties, including the previous round of the Scottish FA Cup in the 5-0 hammering of Morton, it looks as though rotation isn’t something Postecoglou is willing to consider.
