Former Scotland international Alan Hutton ripped into ex-Celtic fullback Jeremie Frimpong after leaving the club to join Bayer Leverkusen in January.
Hutton unimpressed with Frimpong
The 2020/21 campaign has been a year to forget for Neil Lennon’s side. Defeats, Dubai trips and miscommunication off the pitch have summed up the woeful tale for Celtic as their chances of winning 10-in-a-row look unlikely.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton was left shocked by Frimpong’s departure and didn’t expect him to “jump ship” at the first signs of turmoil.
“Genuinely can’t believe he left, it was a massive shock to me, I must admit,” he said.
“On the flip side to it, you look at the price. They brought him in for what, a few hundred thousand pounds, something like that? He’s then sold for £11-11.5million.
“It just shows where his head’s at, if I’m honest, he was obviously one of the players, like Ntcham, that were desperate to leave, they were using Celtic as a stepping stone to then try and kick on and move.
“At the first sign of a move, he’s jumped ship at a difficult period in time so I’m actually very disappointed and I’m pretty sure a lot of the fans who have stuck by him are too.
“Yes, he has been one of the better performers but in a difficult period of time, they’ve stuck by him, wanted him to do well, progress and move forward in the Celtic team and he’s just jumped ship. I can see why they’re totally disappointed.
“On the business side, it’s great business. I mean, £11.5million, is brilliant for a player coming out of Scotland.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
While there may be plenty of frustration concerning Frimpong’s exit, plenty of others wished him well on social media.
But this does emphasise how dire the club’s situation is. Vast improvements, both on and off the pitch, need to be made during the upcoming summer.
