Former Scotland boss Alex McLeish believes that Celtic have the finances to land Mohamed Elyounoussi permanently in January.
Elyounoussi on Lennon’s list
The 26-year-old is currently at Parkhead on loan from Southampton for the second successive campaign, and has scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists from 38 appearances (TransferMarkt).
However, the Norweigan came under criticism recently after he was caught on his phone as his side lost 4-1 to Sparta Prague in the Europa League, but made amends during the following game with a stunning hat-trick against Motherwell.
“They would probably want to see more of what he did last week,” he said. “You know, £8-£9m is nothing in the Premier League in England.
“In Scotland, it’s quite substantial but when you see figures being bandied about in the newspapers about the money Celtic have spent on other players that are in the squad, then you think: ‘Well, Celtic have got the collateral to do that.
“So, you would think that they would certainly have it but I’m sure they would want to get a lot more out of Elyounoussi before they made a commitment such as that.”
Transfer Tavern take
Celtic will be hugely boosted if they can convince Southampton to sell Elyounoussi to them, especially after the performances he has put in so far.
Despite this, the Parkhead chiefs will be watching from now until January to see whether he is worthy of investment to bolster Lennon’s side, who described him as a “top professional” last weekend (via Evening Express).
With the Hoops already playing catchup to Rangers, now is the time to impress.
