Newcastle United look set to step up their interest in Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer, according to the Daily Record.
The Lowdown: Ajer has become a man in demand
Ajer was a regular under both Neil Lennon and John Kennedy last season, making 46 appearances in all competitions.
Alex McLeish labelled the towering defender as ‘influential’ back in October, and it seems the 23-year-old has caught the eye over the last 12 months.
The likes of AC Milan, Newcastle and Norwich City have all been credited with an interest, with Steve Bruce’s side now ready to make their move for Ajer.
The Latest: Magpies plotting £8m bid
The Daily Record claim that Ajer could be heading out of the Parkhead door before Howe enters it however, with Newcastle looking to land the Norwegian who they have watched on a number of occasions last season.
The Verdict: Howe doesn’t have a say?
With the Daily Record claiming Ajer could end up leaving before Howe arrives, it seems as if the latter doesn’t have a say.
Should the pair depart, it’ll be crucial that the club back Howe to bring in proven replacements.
They’ve already secured youngster Liam Shaw from Sheffield Wednesday and appear to have won the race for teenager Joey Dawson from Scunthorpe, however, experienced additions also will be required.
Celtic may have to reinvest most of the money they may receive from Ajer and Edouard for some quality acquisitions, but if that’s what it takes to rival Rangers, then it should be a no brainer to splash the cash.
