The Athletic have recently issued an update about the situation of Celtic star Mohamed Elyounoussi.

This is Elyounoussi's second consecutive loan spell at Parkhead - the Norwegian recently scored for the Bhoys in their 1-1 draw in the Old Firm.

Elyounoussi expected to depart Parkhead

The Athletic have recently reported about potential Southampton transfers and the article also carried an update about Elyounoussi's situation. The piece stated that the Norwegian is expected to return to Southampton in the summer and he will now be given the chance to impress under Ralph Hasenhuttl for next season.

Hasenhuttl is set to use the pre-season to take a look at Elyounoussi and whether he can play for the Saints next season. The Saints don't have too many left footers in the team and that can swing things in Elyounoussi's favour.

The Athletic claim if he fails to impress, he could be sold permanently to raise funds for other players, rather than another loan spell.

Celtic can ill-afford to lose Elyounoussi

Elyounoussi has contributed to 21 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions, and those goals and assists have come at a crucial time. Apart from scoring against Rangers recently, he grabbed a brace against Lille in the Europa League.

He scored a hat-trick against Motherwell, also scoring a goal against Milan. He found the net in a 1-1 draw against St. Johnstone, so time and time again he has bagged in games decided by one goal or draws.

This shows that he's an important big game player for the Bhoys and losing him would only harm them. So if the opportunity arises, they should try to sign him permanently.
