Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan is adamant that the club need to bring in a striker before their next game this weekend – and has demanded the Whites bring in Southampton’s Che Adams to solve their striking woes.
Leeds could not break Sheffield Wednesday down last Saturday as they suffered a late Yorkshire derby defeat and had the gap between themselves and the Championship play-off places cut to just six points. With a striker at the top of his shopping list this January, Whelan told Football Insider that Leeds should waste no more time and bring in Adams from the south coast club to boost their goalscoring threat.
He said: “We’ve shown how desperately we need a striker and we’ve shown on many occasions we need strength in depth, something we don’t have. If Leeds are serious about bringing that experience in, a proven goalscorer, well it’s right there for you now.
“We need someone that’s proven, can score goals in the Championship, someone that has every attribute straight away so they can join this group of players straight away. Stop messing about, get the money put down and get it done, get the player in because we need it before QPR.”
Do Leeds need to sign Che Adams?
Adams’ start to life in the Premier League has been mixed, with the striker only returning to Southampton’s starting line-up in recent weeks, while he came off the bench to set up Danny Ings’ winner against Leicester City at the weekend. Meanwhile, he is yet to score for Southampton – which is hardly surprising given he is averaging just 0.9 shots per game in the top flight, according to WhoScored.
However, his record in the second tier is much more impressive and justifies Whelan’s call for Leeds to bring in Adams, with the striker netting 22 times for a mid-table Birmingham City side last season.
That suggests he may be more prolific for a team fighting for promotion, and with a goalscoring record over twice the size of Patrick Bamford’s last term, a mid-season purchase of Adams could be just what Leeds are looking for.
