Here in the Football Transfer Tavern, Chelsea fans are looking up with interest at the claim from the Daily Mirror that Jose Mourinho has finally abandoned plans to land Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United forward has been one of the top targets for the Special One since his return to England but now it seems that even Jose himself cannot prise Rooney away from United.

As our landlord points out, all Chelsea are really missing is a forward who can actually score goals consistently and the fact that they have now failed yet again to land one of their targets could be an ominous sign.

Now, instead of chasing a dream that will not come off, the club will be forced to consider alternatives and it is not too late to bring one into the club.

The likes of Diego Costa, Karim Benzema and Radamel Falcao have all been mentioned with Chelsea and now we fully expect Mourinho to make the move for one of them.

It is not just Chelsea this affects however, with Manchester United fans looking more relaxed than we have seen them in days ahead of the big clash this Sunday.

Rooney staying is of course massive news and something that David Moyes will be thanking his lucky stars for. The former Everton forward has been the one bright spot in his time at the club after all.
