Chelsea may have lost the UEFA Super Cup to Liverpool, albeit by the fine margin of penalties, but the Blues had a lot to be proud of, especially considering the manner of their weekend defeat to Manchester United just days before.
The final outcome wasn’t as we hoped and planned but we have much to be proud of and I’m sure there will be a lot of reasons to be happy in the future. @ChelseaFC #hardworkpaysoff pic.twitter.com/xTs6o92yT7

The Blues led against Liverpool when Olivier Giroud put them 1-0 up before Sadio Mane equalised to take the game to extra-time. The same Liverpool man then struck again in extra-time before a Jorginho penalty levelled it, but Mateo Kovacic was one of the stars of the show for the Europa League champions.
The Croatian almost scored in the first half, and alongside N’Golo Kante in the middle of the park Kovacic played very well, earning himself a rating of 6/10 from The Guardian for his performance, and after he played over 100 minutes it looks like Frank Lampard has plenty of faith in the midfielder.

The Blues, as you can see from these tweets, were delighted with Kovacic’s performance and it’s up to the ex-Real Madrid man to keep his levels high for the rest of the season.
