Chelsea manager Frank Lampard thinks that Christian Pulisic has the potential to become one of the most prolific wingers in the Premier League.
The former Borussia Dortmund man has been in fine form lately, netting two goals in his last two league appearances. His Bundesliga days saw him contribute some impressive numbers in front of goal but it took him a while to truly showcase his brilliance in England. However, it’s clear that Pulisic is back on an upward trajectory and Lampard has been monitoring his progression closely.
Speaking to the Daily Express, the former Blues midfielder said: “Christian can be a really good player – we can see that. Because he broke through at such a young age in Germany and then gets a big move to us, people’s expectations rise. So, we do have to take his age into consideration. But there’s no doubting his quality.”
Who will score the most goals next season?
This season Pulisic has scored eight goals and assisted six more, with several matches still remaining for him to boost his numbers further (via Transfermarkt).
His performance against Manchester City in particular was one of note. Not only did he contribute to Chelsea’s winning scoreline with the opening goal, he completed four of his five dribbles – which was the most of anyone in the match – and had 100% shot accuracy (via FotMob).
“He has the ability of the Sterlings, Salahs and Manes, who are now producing numbers from wide areas,” Lampard continued. “It’s important he understands what is needed to do that because he certainly has the talent to do it. He needs to try to get to that sort of level.”
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Raheem Sterling are all among the Premier League’s top scorers this season (via BBC Sport). With Liverpool having just been crowned league champions, Salah could now push to win his third consecutive Golden Boot. Pulisic could may well challenge these top wingers next season as Lampard continues to transition this Chelsea side.
The Blues have welcomed new signings Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, with talks between them and Kai Havertz also one of the hottest transfer topics right now. With these high-calibre signings alongside him, the 21-year-old American could see himself grow further with the west London outfit.
With creative maestros like Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Werner around him, Pulisic’s numbers could soar next season.
