According to a report from The Guardian, Chelsea could raise funds to sign Kai Havertz by offloading Italy international midfielder Jorginho, with Serie A giants AS Roma reportedly interested in a swoop for the 28-year-old.
Two seasons ago, Chelsea swooped in to snatch Jorginho out of Manchester City’s hands for a reported £57m – a move which drew controversy from the Cityzens’ point of view as they were under the impression that a deal was agreed.
Now, with Frank Lampard’s side desperately trying to secure a deal for Havertz, the passing midfield maestro could be the one to make way and raise transfer funds, with Blues sporting director Marina Granovskaia keen to balance the books.
Should Chelsea sell Jorginho?
Yes, make it happen for Havertz
No, he's crucial
Having already completed deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, who cost a combined £80m, Chelsea will need to start recuperating those funds to avoid another transfer ban.
Valued at £46.8m by Transfermarkt, Jorginho could certainly help in that regard – but should the Blues part company with a seemingly crucial asset?
Starting 27 matches last season, the Italian was a cool head in midfield, averaging an 88.4% passing accuracy (WhoScored) and leaving little wonder as to why City were keen to sign him back in 2018. He is also defensively sound, having made 2.1 tackles and 2.1 interceptions per game over the 2019/20 campaign.
Team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta certainly sees his value, branding Jorginho a ‘very important player’ in Lampard’s system who is ‘amazing’ at pressing and putting in a shift (Metro).
Given these attributes, it’s debatable whether he should be the one sacrificed to make way for Havertz.
