Chelsea’s name continues to be thrown into the mix of those interested in some of the most highly rated footballers on the planet.
Their newest link finds them eyeing up a move for Marc-Andre ter Stegen in hopes to solve their goalkeeping woes. That’s according to Cadena Ser (via Metro), who claim the shot-stopper is not happy with Barcelona at the moment and could be looking for a way out of the club.
Which goalkeeper would you rather see Chelsea sign?
Marc-Andre ter Stegen
The Spanish radio network has reported that ter Stegen has not taken kindly to Barcelona’s suggestion of lowering his wages. Due to the impact of coronavirus, the Catalonians have been forced to reduce the team’s salary, with other players accepting this. However, the German isn’t best impressed and is now looking at offers tabled for his services, which include Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Ter Stegen’s current deal runs out in 2022 and whilst a transfer fee hasn’t been named, he is currently valued at £64.8million (via Transfermarkt).
The Blues are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper after Kepa Arrizabalaga has failed to win over Frank Lampard. They have been looking at poaching Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid, but Diego Simeone and Co are standing firm on his mammoth £120m release clause (via The Mirror).
Whilst Oblak appears to be a firm choice for Lampard, ter Stegen makes more sense for both parties. The 28-year-old has just two years left on his contract and could be looking to leave sooner than that. Chelsea are very much an exciting project to join and they have the money to splash on a top quality goalkeeper like ter Stegen.
Whilst they could still afford Oblak’s hefty buy-out fee, opting for the Barcelona man instead could leave them with change leftover to pursue other players.
The club have already welcomed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner as their first signings, they must now target more defensive options. Ter Stegen could demand a lot less than La Liga rival Oblak, which could allow Lampard to continue looking for more players to bring to Stamford Bridge ahead of next season.
