Chelsea are still in pursuit of major transfer target Declan Rice despite reports claiming that he is not looking for a move.
The west Londoners have had an admirable business window which has seen them splurge a monumental amount in the region of £222m. Key recruits so far include Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell, but the Blues may not be done yet.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are very keen on adding Rice to their squad in the hope of improving their defence.
Is £80million a fair asking price for Declan Rice?
Despite bringing in 36-year-old veteran Thiago Silva, Frank Lampard’s side still look a long way away from possessing a title-challenging backline.
The Blues conceded three goals in less than half an hour on Saturday in their 3-3 draw against West Bromwich Albion. Silva was at fault for the first Baggies goal, which won’t have filled the team with confidence.
Snapping up Rice could be the answer to their defensive frailties, but West Ham couldn’t be less interested in selling up. Irons assistant coach Alan Irvine is also adamant that the England international is not looking for a move away from the club.
“Declan is extremely happy,” he said. “He was captain today, he is not somebody with other things on his mind.”
Despite this, it seems that Chelsea are still certain they can strike a deal, albeit it could cost them a hefty £80m. Should they complete the signing of Rice, it will rocket their summer spending beyond the £300m mark.
