According to the Guardian, Chelsea fought off Juventus to sign Lucas Piazon back in 2011 but it’s hard to argue that the move has really worked out.
Now, at 25-years-old, Piazon is reportedly of interest to teams in Spain and Portugal (via Football.London) after registering just 16 minutes of game time for the Blues since his work visa was granted in 2012.
So, in 2019, with his youth days gone and youngsters bursting through at Chelsea, it is time for the Brazilian to finally call it quits in west London and here are two reasons why.
NOT A KID ANYMORE
Piazon, now 25, is far beyond the age of where he can be labelled a ‘wonderkid’. Indeed, he may have signed with that tag, but not just is he an adult now, he is, in fact, older than most Chelsea players within the starting XI.
In his position alone, Christian Pulisic, Tammy Abraham, Kenedy, Michy Batshuayi and Callum Hudson-Odoi are all younger than him, with only Willian, Oliver Giroud and Pedro the three forwards older than him within the 27-man squad.
Furthermore, under Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s average age in the starting XI has been 26.4, 25.6 and 24.6-years old in the three games they have played so far, and with young stars like Mason Mount and Abraham shining this season, there is clearly no room for an inexperienced 25-year-old.
AVERAGE LOAN SPELLS
Although he scored 10 goals and assisted eight times during a two-season stint at neighbours Fulham, elsewhere he has struggled to make an impact.
Piazon played just 81 minutes in four months at Chievo most recently, so it’s not as if he’s even given Frank Lampard to think about in terms of possibly including him in his squad.
Over the years he failed to score in 13 appearances for Malaga, bagged only two goals in his 22 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt and registered just three goals and two assists in 23 games for Reading in the Championship.
Piazon did score an impressive 11 goals and bag eight assists in 29 games for Vitesse but considering that was back in 2013/14, it hardly qualifies for a place in the squad now, and subsequently, it’s perhaps time for Piazon to be sold.
