Chelsea make surprise call on Konate as Liverpool exit looms

Chelsea are preparing for the summer transfer window to open in the next few weeks, with Xabi Alonso set to front a pivotal chapter in the club’s future.

The Blues have had another frustrating season full of uncertainty and inconsistency, finishing tenth in the Premier League table and missing out on European football as a result of their poor form.

The appointment of Alonso has given the supporters a lot of hope and excitement about the potential of a new chapter and a change in structure ahead of the transfer window and next season.

What are Chelsea’s transfer priorities?

The Blues are expected to change their strategy after spending the last few years prioritising the signing of young players, putting all of their faith in long-term development as opposed to reliable experience.

This approach has been a major factor in their struggles to consistently compete both domestically and on the European stage, as there are no real leadership qualities in the spine of the squad.

BlueCo have hired and fired four permanent head coaches during their tenure so far, so Alonso’s managerial role is pivotal in the recruitment and management of the club going forward.

The Athletic reported that Alonso sought clarification on the club’s sporting structure and expressed his desire to build a team of ‘mentality monsters’ at Stamford Bridge.

The publication claimed that Chelsea are targeting at least two starting-calibre signings in this summer’s transfer market, with proven talent set to be prioritised.

Chelsea decide against Konate transfer

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have decided against signing Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer this summer.

The Blues have been monitoring the defender’s situation at Anfield, as there was uncertainty up until this week over whether he would remain on Merseyside or depart.

Ultimately, the publication claims that despite the opportunity to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer, the wage package, signing-on fees and agent commissions have put the Blues off the idea, and they will now seek alternative options.

Who are Chelsea’s defensive targets?

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke has been named as one of the potential targets for Chelsea, with his Premier League experience an attractive prospect.

Despite a move to Tottenham Hotspur appearing to be almost over the line, Marcos Senesi is another target for the Blues as they could potentially hijack his move to North London as a free agent.

Ousmane Diomande, Antonio Rudiger and Tomás Araújo are also touted as options for the Blues, all offering a diverse skill set and varying levels of experience.

Who could sign Konate instead?

Konate’s uncertain future has attracted interest from across Europe, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain all linked with the defender in recent months as he prepares to become one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.

Despite Arne Slot’s recent sacking at Liverpool, there has been no change regarding Konate potentially signing a new contract, and the defender is still expected to move on.

There is a strong argument that Chelsea could have benefited from signing the France international, as he has the experience and talent to be a guaranteed starter at Stamford Bridge next season.

The decision not to sign Konate will divide supporters, but if Chelsea can find a worthy alternative over the coming weeks to make an instant impact in central defence next season, the missed opportunity will quickly be forgotten.
