Mateo Kovačić sort of went under the radar during his loan spell at Chelsea this season. The young Croatian midfielder definitely has the talent and the skills, but he somehow comes short in times when he’s supposed to be shining. Still, it seems that the Blues are ready to make his deal permanent if the reports from Marca (via Sport Witness) are to be believed. The only problem, however, is the looming transfer ban that could prove to be a brick wall for Chelsea.
The Blue side of London is still trembling in the midst of the final verdict on their potential transfer ban that would see them prohibited from signing any new players for the team. And it seems that this rule extends to the situation of Mateo Kovačić, the Los Blancos’ loanee. The Croat has been struggling under Zinedine Zidane and decided to seek his fortune in the Premier League.
Saying that he found it at Chelsea would, in my opinion, be a bit of an overstatement but missing out on him and not giving him a shot would also be a mistake. Everyone can see that this £31.50m valued midfielder has it in him to become a future star but it just hasn’t happened for him just yet. All we’ve seen are glimpses of the talent that should, if everything goes well, translate into something much bigger sooner rather than later.
Losing such a gem might not seem like a big deal now (I mean, 0 goals and 3 assists are barely stats to shout about), and in truth, maybe his absence would not be felt immediately, but if Chelsea have the option to make his deal permanent, they should definitely cash in on it. In this short spell at Stamford Bridge, there were already signs of better things to come and his already established versatility and creativity in attack is something the Londoners can certainly make use of.
No one is quite sure what’ll happen to him. Indeed, the transfer ban is seemingly here to stay but reports previously from the Telegraph have suggested he still could be signed.
Confusing to sat the least.
Kovačić is also a player that can thrive in big games, having already experienced big Champions League nights with Real Madrid and World Cup glory with Croatia, when they went all the way in Russia. And now, he’ll be able to add a Europa League to his resume, which keeps growing and becoming more and more impressive.
And there lies the key to this deal: Kovačić is already a player that can give you a lot but he is also a bet for the future. It’s difficult to guarantee anything in football but as we all know – he who dares, wins. Dare to do this, Chelsea, and the rewards might come in abundance.
Chelsea fans, would you like to keep Mateo Kovačić in the team? Do you think your club will be able to reverse/ delay the transfer ban so that the purchase of the young Croat can go through? Let us know in the comments below…
