Chelsea & Manchester City’s ‘combined XI’ of the season

Both Chelsea and Manchester City have endured very similar seasons.

Both went into the 2012/13 season with great expectations after City had won the Premier League title and Chelsea had bought home the Champions League just a few months previously.

The two richest clubs in the country have both flattered to deceive somewhat, with both finding themselves dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage, enduring cup heartaches and being at the centre of off-field dramas. Chelsea did however claim the Europa League trophy yesterday evening adding some gloss to their season and the CV of interim boss Rafael Benitez.

With both sides still possessing such fantastic squads nevertheless, it has not all been doom and gloom, and there has been some fantastic football played by both sides along the way.

With expectations at both clubs so high, whilst the 2012/13 season may ultimately end up being a failure for both, it should not be forgotten that some players have served their clubs with distinction, and deserve some credit.

There is plenty of room to build for both sides, and with both having endless resources to improve further, it is likely that this season will soon be nothing more than a disappointing memory for both.
