Chelsea open to selling “fantastic” star to Bayern Munich, and it’s not Christopher Nkunku

Chelsea kicked off their 2025 Club World Cup campaign on Monday night with a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC in Group D at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández secured the win for the Blues, and there were plenty of positives to take away from the three points.

Manager Enzo Maresca handed Chelsea debuts to summer signings Liam Delap and Dário Essugo. Delap, who joined from Ipswich Town for £30 million, impressed with his all-round performance despite not getting on the scoresheet.

Among those praising Delap was teammate Levi Colwill: “I’ve known Liam for a long time now, and I’ve played against him loads of times. Growing up, you know what sort of players are going to make it and he was always one of those. To have him in our team, to train against him, to see him score goals – which I know he will – I’m very excited.”

Tosin Adarabioyo added: “He’s settled in very well. He’s a good young lad and we know what qualities he brings. He’s aggressive [when] pressing and an aggressive striker, making sure he’s always there, setting the intensity. Hopefully he scores many goals for us.”

Bayern Munich Interested in Malo Gusto

Another player who featured in the win was right-back Malo Gusto, who came on for Reece James after halftime. However, that appearance could be one of his last in a Chelsea shirt.

According to Chelsea insider Simon Phillips, Bayern Munich have made an inquiry about signing the French defender this summer. The Bundesliga giants are also expected to reignite their interest in Christopher Nkunku, having failed to sign him in January.

Despite being a regular since his £26 million move from Olympique Lyonnais in 2023, Gusto could be allowed to leave. Manager Enzo Maresca has praised him as a “fantastic player,” but reports suggest Chelsea may be open to a sale.

Gusto’s playing time has declined since James returned from injury, and the emergence of highly-rated academy prospect Josh Acheampong has increased competition at right-back. Phillips claims Maresca views Acheampong as James’ long-term backup.

A move to Bayern could be ideal for Gusto. His ability to transition smoothly from defense to attack and his comfort on the ball make him a great fit for Vincent Kompany’s all-action side. His crossing ability would also benefit Bayern striker Harry Kane, who thrives on quality service from wide areas.

Should Chelsea Sell?

Letting go of the French international could prove risky for Chelsea. With Reece James’ injury history and Acheampong still unproven at the top level, selling Gusto might leave the squad exposed if circumstances turn against them.

For now, Chelsea must weigh short-term stability against long-term strategy as Bayern circle for yet another Stamford Bridge talent.
