Chelsea reportedly set for negotiations over deal for imposing star, Conte’s a huge fan

Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted with news of a potential contract extension for midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian star returned to Chelsea in January 2014 and was an integral part of the Blues side that lifted the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho 18 months later.

The towering midfielder came under criticism last season as the Blues’ form plummeted and Mourinho was sacked, but he’s re-established himself as a crucial member of the starting XI under Antonio Conte – featuring in all but one of Chelsea’s 27 Premier League fixtures so far this term.

The west Londoners are well on course to lift the title after beating West Ham on Monday night and Matic’s contributions look set to be rewarded with a new contract, extending his current terms beyond summer 2019.

Indeed, Mirror Football claim Chelsea are set to open contract negotiations with the 28-year-old during the summer, with Conte deeming him an important part of his plans going forward. Chelsea will likely be defending the title next season and back in the Champions League.

However, it’s further added that the Stamford Bridge outfit will look to strengthen their midfield options during the coming transfer window; Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko and Atalanta wonderkid Franck Kessie are said to be on their radar.
