Chelsea should up the negotiations with David Luiz in order to reach an agreement with the defender to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.
Luiz is out of contract at the end of the season after returning to the Blues in 2016 from PSG and has been superb form under the new structures of Maurizio Sarri. The former Benfica man was an important figure in the Chelsea team that won the league in 2017 and has become one of the leaders at the club.
The 31-year-old has started and completed every single Premier League match so far this season and has formed quite a solid partnership with Antonio Rudiger in the Chelsea defence. Sarri returned the team to a back-four system after former manager Antonio Conte’s belief in playing with three defenders at the back and two wing-backs.
But the current defence, with Luiz very much at the centre of it, has reaped massive rewards for the manager that have seen Chelsea yet to lose a match in all competitions since the season got underway in August.
Despite being rested in the Europa League matches, Luiz has looked rejuvenated and hungry to achieve success under Sarri.
The West London club should, however, provide Sarri with an idea with what he’ll have to his availability in the future and particularly next season, when Chelsea are expected to feature in the Champions League again.
By saying that, Chelsea should get the Brazilian to commit his future at the club in order to go into the Champions League with someone with the experience and composure of Luiz.
Given the interview that the Chelsea boss did with Gazzetta dello Sport, via Calcio Mercato, it looks as if Sarri is quite a big admirer of Luiz and clearly sees him as an integral part of his plans to steer the club to new heights.
It’d be no surprise if some of Europe’s biggest clubs would start to pressure Chelsea to sell the centre-back if they fail to pin him down soon, but given the manager’s belief and trust in him, the pressure might also rise on the club to offer him a longer stay in England.
