It has been the norm for several years now and this year is no surprise as another transfer window is upon us and Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea are linked with another host of names. With the transfer embargo briefly lifted, transfer speculation at Chelsea has intensified, with a multitude of names being linked with January moves to Stamford Bridge despite Carlo Ancelotti’s insistence that his side will not sign. With the likes of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou away at the African Nations, a striker is the order of the day in west London and the two names that reportedly top Ancelotti’s January wish list are that of Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko, so who would be the better bet?
Sergio Aguero is fast becoming one of the world’s most sought after players and despite being just 21 years of age, the striker is already shedding his skin at Atlético Madrid. The Argentinean striker has taken the Spanish league by storm since joining Atlético back in 2006 and has proved a key figure for the Madrid side. His goal scoring record is second to none, having scored at a rate of just under 1 in 2 with 50 goals in 126 appearances in Spain. He has solidified his reputation as a proven goal scorer and is feared by defenders throughout La Liga and Europe.
Aguero, at just 21 would prove a good bet for the Blues however, the transfer figures that have been thrown about have deterred the side who have aspirations of breaking even in the near future, with Roman Abramovich supposedly needed to reach for £40 million to bring the striker to Stamford Bridge. Sergio Aguero, or ‘Kun Aguero’ as he is perhaps better known in Spain undoubtedly has the technical ability to succeed in any league in the world yet he is not the most physical of players and standing at just 5ft 7½in, is likely to initially struggle with the physicality of the Premier League. Having said this, the Argentine has already proved his worth at international level and came off the bench to score a stunning brace against Chelsea in the Champions League and the Blues are arguably the most physical side in the league.
Dzeko, unlike Aguero, has only really come onto the footballing radar recently after he helped fire his club VFL Wolfsburg to their first ever German title last year. The Bosnian international also has a stunning goal scoring record, scoring 44 goals in 71 appearances for the German outfit and has also attracted interest from several other European giants including A.C. Milan. He stands at a mammoth 6ft 3½in and is unsurprisingly a threat in the air. He would maybe fit Chelsea’s approach as they already stand as one of the largest sides in the division yet there are fears that his style may clash with that of Didier Drogba, who also provides a considerable aerial threat.
Dzeko’s ability cannot be questioned as he has also provided on the international stage as well as impressing in this year’s Champions League (a well taken header at Old Trafford against Manchester United springs to mind) yet it must be noted that the German league is a shadow of its former self and there are question marks over whether Dzeko could maintain such a record in the Premier League. The Bosnian would however, cost a considerable amount less that Aguero and could be available for around £20 million, half that of the Argentine.
It is hard to choose between the two players and as time passes, each transfer looks less likely to take place. Despite his lack of height, Aguero could easily be a success in the Premier League and could follow in the footsteps of former Atlético striker Fernando Torres who has since taken the league by storm. Dzeko brings with him a completely different approach and would be available at a cheaper price but is likely to be the less popular approach with Chelsea fans who are eager to see the excitement that Aguero could bring to Stamford Bridge.

FWD: 1. Pato or Aguero
2. Villa, Torres, Pazzini, Dzeko, Gomis, or Nilmar
3. Mata, Krasic or Babel
4. Lukaku or Joselu
MID: 1. Franck Ribery or Bastian Schweinsteiger
2. David Silva
3. Marek Hamsik, Rafael van der Vaart, Angel di Maria or Alan Dzagoev (preferably two)
4. Neymar, Alex Teixeira, Miralem Pjanic or Lucas Piazon
DEF: 1. Darijo Srna
2. Juan Manuel Vargas
first sign Pato or (more likely Aguero) and leave them where theey are for the moment to mature and develop.
We also need a striker for now, Torres would be the best pick but is unlikely, Villa would be good but is really a bit on the expensive side, Suarez is from the Dutch league (Kezman anyone), Chamakh, Gignac and Zarate are all linked to other clubs, Adriano and Cassano have attitude problems we don’t need. Nilmar, Gomis and Pazzini represent the best options for now, sell Kalou to Barca, buy one of these guys. Dzeko would also be good but he has his heart set on Milan, we’d be better going to Nilmar, Gomis or Pazzini.
Anelka is ageing, i’d like to reduce our reliance upon him behind Drogba (a position to which he is not really suited) and use him as a super sub. Behind Drogba we could alternate between a second out and out striker (Gomis, Nilmar, Pazzini), a creative attacking midfielder Joao Moutinho, Miralem Pjanic, Alan Dzagoev or Marek Hamsik, or a winger Babel, Krasic or Mata. Moutinho would be ideal to replace Deco in either January or July, Pjanic is a future Lampard, as is Dzagoev and Hamsik is already like Lampard, we should lock up a few of these attacking mids. Babel has failed at Liverpool but that was Rafa’s fault, he could reach his true potential at Chelsea, and after 6 months at Brum we can scoop him up cheaply. Krasic is a star for CSKA, Man U and Citeh also want him, we’d be wise to move swiftly, if Joe Cole does leave he’d be an ideal replacement. Mata could be the next David Villa, for now though he is a potent winger and much cheaper than David Villa too. Romelu Lukaku and Joselu ( as well as Tomas Necid, Andrej Kramarić, Henri Saivet) offer the opportunity to enhance our youth forward pack, of Borini, Sturridge, Kakuta and Stoch.
I’d love Aguero and Ribery, hopefully the lure trophy potential will bring them to the Bridge, but if it doesn’t there are always others who can. I don’t want to see Aguero at Chelsea in february he should be bought and immediately loaned back to Athletico for at least 6 months maybe 12 or 18, he’s been developing nicely there he should stay until we really need him ie when Drogba or Anelka goes. You never know about Torres i think his future at Liverpool will be a short one, and we can offer that trophy allure something that I think Man City are still a few years from yet, plus imagine Drogba and Torres upfront together, they’d be near unstoppable. Another option is David Villa who we are continually being linked with him the media, he’d be good, probably not as good as for Chelsea as the likes of Torres, Pato or Aguero, but I still think he’d be a fine addition to the club.I don’t think he’s the best option but while Aguero remains coy, Nilmar has just recently moved to Villareal, Pato doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and suddenly we’re faced with a choice between Kenwyne Jones, Emile Heskey, Hulk and David Villa, i’d pick Villa. Nilmar has to be our first July target as i see it, while Aguero should be signed in January and loaned back to Athletico for 12 to 18 months, with Villa, Pazzini or Cassano coming in January, and Nilmar in July (Kalou or the January signing being loaned out elsewhere), Aguero arriving when Drogba or Anelka hangs up the boots. that still leaves options for Kakuta, Borini and Sturridge while covering us for the ACN and injuries.
Adriano would be a risk, but he’d also be cheap so maybe that’s a risk worth taking. With both Pazzini and Cassano the problem is their lack of EPL experience, but Zola had that too when he came and either of these pair could prove to be a Zola second coming. I wouldn’t rule out Gignac moving, but you’re right it probably won’t be to Chelsea, ditto Chamakh, Nilmar has to be our first July target as i see it, Aguero should be signed and loaned back to Athletico for 12 to 18 months, with Villa, Pazzini or Cassano coming in January, and Nilmar in July (Kalou or the January signing being loaned out elsewhere), Aguero arriving when Drogba or Anelka hangs up the boots.
In the midfield we obviously need more speed (and youth), Joe Cole is fast but the rest of the mids not quiet so much. I’d like Franck Ribery to replace Malouda on the left side, but Bastian Schweinsteiger would be a great alternative if we don’t get Ribery and we know he works well with Ballack and has an awesome dead ball strike on him, (we’d obviously keep Malouda in that scenario). de Rossi’s spot is difficult because we have Essien (who’s better anyway), so he’s probably a pipe dream, as is Hamsik, Dzagoev and van der Vaart as we already have Lampard/Deco/Joe Cole there, i’d still like one of the younger ones, Hamsik or Dzagoev or maybe we can get VDV cheap in Real’s closing down sale of its Dutch warehouse. di Maria would slot in perfectly at Left Mid. Worst of all i’d also love to find spots for my favourite (non Barca) Iberian mids, Raul Meireles (Mikel maybe?), Joao Moutinho (who could replace Deco so there’s a spot) and David Silva (also an option to replace Deco). Piazon, Neymar, Pastore and Teixeira could give us an edge over Arsenal in talented youth mids, an edge we’ve never had, and Rodwell could be groomed to replace Essien long term.
As for backs, Kjaer is a long term must, Srna would only really be needed if Ivanovic wants to go to RM, while you are right about Vargas, i still think we could find a spot for him, Ashley Cole, Zhirkov, Ribery/di Maria/Malouda and Vargas would give us a completely world class left side for bothe first and second XI
please roman and lotti. it well be very to see a new talented young players in the squad.please make a move for augero and pato
Roman said he will bring ALOT of money to made trasfers next seasson, so why dont buy both Dzeko and Aguero?, Dzeko is a MOST sing next seasson, he is the only one who can take Drogba’s place, they are both tal, strong players, they can’t just buy Aguero, he is to week alone, so buy Dzeko as a striker, and buy Aguero and play him like a left winger and malouda as a right winger, chelsea need to buy Lukaku to.. he is the Drogba num2! but he is to young right now
