Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are thinking if any manager has to ask themselves a plethora of questions about what has gone wrong this season Antonio Conte has to be up there. With the Blues missing out on Champions League football again, which is soul-destroying for them, it’s not been a great year in SW6.

After a bit of a wobble at the start of the season, our regulars started to notice that Chelsea looked to improve weekly and seemed destined to grab a top-four spot turning into the New Year. However, by only winning three Premier League games so far this year, they have slipped out of the top-four places and now are looking in dire straits, with Arsenal now breathing down their necks in 6th.

The former Premier League champions have lost their crown to a Man City team that is in irresistible form under Pep Guardiola. Having lifted the trophy twice in three years, Chelsea will be eager to push City close next season, despite the current gap between the two teams.

Indeed, Conte will be certainly raising a few questions of himself come the end of the season, and talks with the board about his future will surely be a little firey, to say the least. With that in mind, here are TWO questions the Italian must ask himself come May…

Poor Transfer Decision

Conte has been working with a threadbare squad for the majority of the season, mainly down to injuries and possibly not having the most productive summer and winter windows, where he missed out on many targets. However, not many of the additions he’s made have worked all too well, with the likes of Bakayoko, Morata and Drinkwater proving inconsistent.

Though he’s often highlighted his lack of spending power, the Italian hasn’t exactly invested wisely to convince the board to release more funds.

Lack of Silverware

Although Chelsea are still in for the FA Cup, realistically it’s their only chance to get their hands on some silverware, to save an incredibly poor season. While Conte won the league title in his first year, a cup trophy will add a little something different to his English experience, having never won a cup in his managerial career.

An FA Cup win would, as with most teams, build momentum going into next season. Maybe it won’t keep him around but leaving on a high would certainly add to his legend in SW6.
