Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed the cost of Coventry City’s planned new stadium build.
The Sky Blues played their home games in the 2019/20 season across the Midlands at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s Stadium.
Promotion to the Championship has seen Mark Robins prepare for the future and recent links have emerged about a potential return to the city’s Ricoh Arena, which is owned by rugby club Wasps.
Coventry are currently on a second exile from the stadium which they previously called home, having also spent time at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium.
Despite those links of a possible return, it has now been announced that the club have struck a deal with University of Warwick over a new-build stadium.
“If they are going to be ambitious then the capacity of the stadium has to a minimum of 30,000,” football finance expert Maguire told BBC CWR as quoted by Coventry Live.
“There will be significant costs. You’re not going to get much for short than £100 million, I would imagine, for the cost of the stadium, especially if it is going to be green and carbon-neutral.
“It will be an expensive project but it could be very successful.”
With the revelation of the new-build stadium and little happening in terms of a return to the Ricoh Arena, it remains to be seen if Coventry will continue to ground-share with Birmingham next season.
This is superb news for Coventry City fans, who have been waiting for some time to find a place they can truly call home.
The new build will not only give those fans a bona fide venue for their club; it should also give the Sky Blues a fresh identity to go hand-in-hand with their on-field success.
