It is no secret that Liverpool have been without width for far too long. After the exit of Rafa Benitez a few different players have been brought in to try and offer decent wing play for the Anfield outfit but it is fair to say that no one has really come close to delivering.
Now with the aerial ability of Andy Carroll on their books it is needed more than ever and it would appear a near certainty that at least one winger will be joining the club this Summer. The latest person to be linked with the side is former Celtic midfielder Aiden McGeady.
McGeady joined the Celtic youth setup in 2001 at 15 years of age and quickly progressed through the ranks, and at 17 he made his first team debut in a game against Hearts towards the end of the 03-04 season. He became a regular in the first team at the beginning of the 04-05 season and went on to make 248 appearances for the club as a vital play maker. He was especially impressive in the 2007-2008 campaign during which he managed 24 assists and 8 goals.
In August 2010 McGeady made the slightly strange move to Russia in a deal worth £9.5million to Spartak Moscow, this made him the most expensive export in the history of Scottish football. He finished the season strongly for the Russian side providing 6 assists in 10 appearances. With his good performances in Russia and his glittering career in Scotland it is perhaps not surprising that there is is now talk of him moving on to bigger things already.
The tricky and pacey winger has attracted a lot of interest from other clubs, as well as Liverpool, he has been closely monitored by Zenit St Petersburg, and it is thought that there could be a large bid forthcoming from Juventus this Summer. It would appear that Spartak are unwilling to sell the player to a rival, so a move to Zenit may not be overly likely. Juve seem happy to double the money that the Moscow side spent on the player, they are thought to be preparing a bid in the region of £20million and Kenny Dalglish will have to match that to secure the player.
Should a bid be tabled by Liverpool that is deemed acceptable by the club, a move to Anfield could be an attractive proposition for the player. The opportunity to work with Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool would be extremely hard to turn down, and even though Juventus are also a massive club I believe Merseyside would be the preferred destination of the player.
It would be a transfer that would really aid Liverpool and help them rebuild for next term, Jovanovic and Cole have both struggled from the flanks this season and McGeady would offer a new dimension. Even though it would require a large outlay of money I think this could be a great deal for Liverpool and one that will help them move back up the Premier League table.
