Speaking to talkSPORT, Spurs pundit Darren Gough has delivered his take surrounding claims that Tottenham are contenders for the Premier League title this season under Jose Mourinho.
After a flurry of marquee signings in the transfer market, figures like Harry Redknapp have expressed excitable verdicts in tipping Spurs for a top-flight crown.
Can Spurs win the league this season?
Definitely, look at our squad
No, any trophy would do
Mourinho madness
The signings of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Carlos Vinicius and the sensational return of Gareth Bale capped off a summer to remember for Daniel Levy, and now the Lilywhites are considered outside contenders.
Under former manager and fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs came close to silverware on a few occasions, including in Champions League, where they narrowly lost out to Liverpool in the 2019 final.
With Pochettino gone and Mourinho at the helm, Tottenham have enjoyed a fine start to this season after reinforcing their squad, demolishing Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford and Southampton 5-2 at St Mary’s.
Given Tottenham’s noteworthy form of late, Gough has shed light on Spurs’ hopes for a trophy by the end of the season and he claims, despite recent good result, it would be an ‘absolute miracle’ if they supplant Liverpool as Premier League champions.
🤔 Ade: “If he doesn’t win a trophy in his first full season, it’s a failure surely?”
❌ Goughie: “Absolute rubbish, I’m not having this…”
🏆 Ade: “Why do you think they sacked Poch? There was no sign of a trophy.”

Transfer Tavern take
Going on to say that a Tottenham title win would be ‘fantastic’, given how they finished 40 points off the summit in 2019/20, winning the league this season could be deemed one of the biggest miracles in recent years.
It’s hard to argue with Gough’s assessment, especially given that few would have tipped for Spurs for a challenge before the likes of Bale and Vinicius arrived.
Only time will tell whether Tottenham are genuinely in the hunt for a coveted title win, but it would be a massive achievement if they go the distance in 2020/21.
