On this day in 2017, Tottenham Hotspur made their first signing of that summer when they signed Davinson Sanchez from Ajax and the rest is history. The Colombian defender has been immense for club and country since that move and the fans will be hoping for many more good years from him.

Sanchez has been an absolute dream for Tottenham fans. The Colombian has shown competence to slot into both a back four and a back three under Mauricio Pochettino and he’s down extremely well to fill the shoes of Toby Alderweireld who missed most of last season with a hamstring injury and a breakdown in contract talks. A lot of Tottenham fans wouldn’t have been fussed to lose the Belgian this summer, which says a lot about Sanchez’s form.
However, Alderweireld has stayed and now it looks like Sanchez, Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen will be the club’s central defence and there aren’t many Tottenham fans who can argue with that. Obviously, the two Belgian’s are older and more streetwise but the 22-year-old stopper has the raw pace and strength to make even the sharpest forwards look blunt and ineffective.
