Look at him now: Celtic and Virgil van Dijk

Look at him now: Celtic and Virgil van Dijk - Look at them now

Celtic fans have loved the way this season has gone. Eight in a row came round in routine fashion despite a rocky start, and now they look set to smash through the Scottish Cup final and win the treble-treble. Despite all of their success, there’s not much they wouldn’t give to somehow lure Virgil van Dijk back to the club after his 2015 exit.

If we’re being realistic, there is absolutely no chance of Van Dijk ever finding his way back to Parkhead as a player, even if his time in Glasgow as very productive for the Dutchman. The PFA Premier League Player of the Year winner for the 2018/19 season won the only honours he has to his name in his days in Scotland, with two Scottish Premier League and one Scottish League Cup winners medals.

The Dutch defender may have been at Celtic in the early stages of their current eight in a row, as he helped them towards their third and fourth titles in the current run, but he showed the signs back then of being the defender he is now. The now 27-year-old had a spell at Southampton before his world record move to Liverpool in January 2018, and since that move, he’s become a whole new player.

There is truly no better defender in the world at the moment than Van Dijk. The likes of Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jerome Boateng and plenty of others have been lauded as the best defender in the world in recent years. Now, though, there truly is no defender better than Van Dijk, and if you don’t trust our judgement on that surely us can get comfort from the fact that Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels also thinks the Dutchman is the best in his position.

It really is a tough one when looking at Celtic and Van Dijk and seeing who has been more impressive since the fateful day when Southampton snapped up the Dutchman for £13 million in September 2015. Celtic have kicked on and won four more consecutive league titles whilst Van Dijk has claimed the crown of the best defender in the world, and it would come as no surprise if he’s in the argument to win the Ballon d’Or for 2019.

If anything, £13m looks really rather cheap now.

Bhoys, name your best memories of the big Dutchman…
