With news coming out last weekend that the club were not renewing Jozo Simunovic’s contract, many have been discussing whether this was the right move, but former Celtic defender Derek Whyte is surprised that the Hoops are not keeping the centre-back on their books.
The defender signed for the Scottish side in 2015 and enjoyed five successful years at the club, winning the Scottish Premiership five times, whilst also being part of six domestic cup victories, per Transfermarkt.
He made 126 appearances across all competitions, keeping 59 clean sheets whilst also managing to score five goals along the way.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun about the player being released, Whyte said: “That really surprised me. I thought he was decent as well. He’s only 25 and centre backs don’t usually get into their prime until they are 27 or 28.
“It depends on the player’s circumstances too though. Maybe he wants to move closer to home or go somewhere else in Europe. But I was really shocked at that.
“Maybe Neil has got a replacement pencilled in who he can bring in because the centre-back area will definitely need to be addressed.”
It’s hard to disagree with Whyte here, with Krisoffer Ajer heavily linked with a move away and Simunovic leaving, the club are currently short in the centre-back area, with only three players in that position, and one of them, Jack Hendry, has struggled to be seen as a good defensive option for the squad, as he was recently shipped out on loan to Australian side Melbourne City.
If they do want to maintain their dominance in Scotland they will have to reinforce in the centre of defence, as one or two injuries in the back line could see them have to use players who are not used to that position which could cause them a lot of issues at the back.
