Former Scotland defender Alan Hutton believes that Celtic winger James Forrest would thrive in the English Premier League and has tipped him to make the move south of the border.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton revealed that he has plenty of admiration for the 28-year-old and said he would not be surprised if Forrest teamed up with ex-Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at Leicester.
The former Tottenham and Aston Villa man knows Forrest from being in Scotland squads with him and said that he has a grounded attitude, believing that he has all the qualities needed to be a success in the English Premier League with a club such as Leicester.
Hutton told Football Insider: “He seems to have been around forever – he’s still only young. Meeting up in the Scotland squad and things, he’s a really nice guy, down-to-earth. He’s one that’s got everything.
“I just see him maybe flourishing at a team like Leicester or maybe one of these type of teams – obviously a manager that knows him well. I really think he’s got everything that it takes to make it down in the big league.”
Based on Forrest’s excellent scoring and creativity return for Celtic not just in recent weeks, but also from last season, it isn’t difficult to see why Hutton believes he could flourish in the English top-flight.
Coming into Celtic’s Europa League clash against Rennes, the 28-year-old had scored seven goals in 13 appearances for the Hoops this season (0.54 per game) and recorded five assists (0.38 per game). Those seven goals have come in his last nine games, while he has scored in each of his last four European matches. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]
Only Ryan Christie has scored more than him for Celtic in 2018/19 with eight goals, while Forrest is their joint top assists provider along with Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]
His recent form isn’t out of character, either. He ended last season with 18 goals and 20 assists in 56 games (0.32 goals and 0.36 assists per game). That goals tally was second only to Edouard, while he was their leading assists provider, four ahead of Callum McGregor. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]
Looking at Leicester, the club name-checked by Hutton, only Jamie Vardy has scored more than once for them this season (three goals in six games for a 0.5 match average), and while James Maddison is their leading assists provider with two in six games (0.33 per game) – the Foxes’ leading goals and assists providers both have lower averages than Forrest this season. Therefore, it’s quite understandable why Hutton feels that Forrest would succeed in the Premier League, so perhaps Celtic should be prepared for English clubs to come knocking on their door to enquire about him.
