This summer looks like it could be absolutely huge at Celtic Park. The Hoops have had to deal with a turbulent season despite winning yet another treble. As a result of that historic treble, their third in succession which you will undoubtedly already know, Neil Lennon has been offered the permanent job, but he’s not a touch on Brendan Rodgers.
When Rodgers upped and left for Leicester City the fans were far from happy. The Northern Irishman jumped at the first chance to move back south of the border and whilst for a lot of fans that made perfect sense, the Hoops cannot understand why he’s turned down the chance to manage in Europe and win trophies just to go into a mid-table job with Leicester. That’s why here we’re comparing Rodgers and Lennon.
Neil Lennon may have absolutely smashed it in his first spell with the Bhoys. Between 2010 and 2014 the soon-to-be full-time Celtic manager started off the club’s run of eight Scottish Premiership titles in a row, winning numbers one, two and three. Now, he’s recently won number eight too but that doesn’t mean he’s the right man for nine and ten, and this could be a decision that costs the club.
Brendan Rodgers’ side was what Lennon inherited in the second half of the season and whilst that squad of players wasn’t, and still isn’t, perfect, the fact that the side only managed to bag 13 times in 11 league games under Lennon isn’t good enough. The lack of attacking creativity and crazy lineups that have become synonymous with Lennon the last few months haven’t filled the Bhoys with confidence, and for obvious reasons.
TT GRADE: C
Rodgers is one of the best managers that Parkhead has ever seen from a tactical standpoint. In the Bhoys’ 131 year history they’ve won six domestic trebles. Three of those have come in the last three years and that is all down to the brilliance of Brendan Rodgers. His side’s football and their business on and off the pitch have been revolutionary north of the border and the Hoops will be missing him now.
The way in which Rodgers walked away from the club was not what the Bhoys wanted or needed. It was bad enough to have to lose the 46-year-old but it was to be expected. Making a move back to the Premier League after having a chance to win silverware in Scotland get over his disappoint of failing in the 2013/14 title race with Liverpool, and now he’s at Leicester the chances are he won’t be returning to Celtic, even if he took the SPL by storm.
TT GRADE: A+
This one is pretty open and shut. Rodgers has been one of the best gaffers that the Bhoys have seen and has moved on for better things. Meanwhile, Lennon has peaked, left, gone downhill and now returned. He doesn’t seem to be the man that the Parkhead faithful need to lead them towards ten in a row, and it cannot be understated how much better Rodgers is for the job.
