How about a quick rumour for the football fan on the go? This one is for you! Newcastle look to be joining Arsenal in their pursuit of French midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Arsenal have been long term admirers of the midfielder and they very nearly made a move for the player a couple of years ago, it now appears that if they are to move for the player this Summer they will face competition from the Geordie side.
Matuidi began his career playing for various youth sides, before eventually progressing through the academy at Troyes whom he joined in 2004. He broke into the first team briefly during the 04/05 season, but it was the following year where he got promoted to the first team squad full time.
He spent 2 seasons with the club and he left when they were relegated to Ligue 2. The player then signed for Saint-Etienne where he has remained ever since, and he has become a crucial part of the teams first 11 and at numerous occasions he has been linked with other clubs.
After considering a move for the player in 2008, Arsenal are now looking at moving for the player again. Matuidi is known for being a strong tackler and has also been described as ‘fierce’. Now if ever there was something that Arsenal lack, ferocity is it! They have not had anyone to snap away and dominate teams in the midfield since they lost Patrick Vieira and I really think it is something they could do with.
Newcastle already have Cheik Tiote who does a similar job, so in many ways their need for the combative midfielder seems less necessary. With them also having Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan as well they do not lack determination and agression in the centre of their team.
The player who has also been tracked by Schalke is thought to be determined to move this Summer and French media has reported that there is a get out clause in his contract, although the figure is unclear it is not thought to be out of reach for either Newcastle or Arsenal.
For me, a player like Matuidi is the missing link that Arsenal need to win major trophies again, and since Arsene Wenger has been close to moving for the player before, I would be surprised if there wasn’t a move for him this Summer.
