Rangers have gone a long time in the shadow of their Old Firm rivals in the last seven or eight years. The Gers have threatened to make it back to the top at times, though, and one of those occasions saw them overcome the Bhoys at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup back in 2016 when they overcame their greatest rivals on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Rangers had two heroic goalscorers throughout the 120 minutes before they had to brave penalties against Celtic. Kenny Miller opened the scoring to make it 1-0 before the final whistle went with the score at 1-1. After that, the last 30 minutes were always going to be key and the man who took it to the Bhoys in extra time was Barrie McKay before ultimately penalties decided it.
In the end, the win would mean very little as Hibs famously overcame the Gers in the Scottish Cup final, one that would go down in history for a lot of reasons and not all of them good. That game and that win was massive in the semi-finals, though, and for a time it had a lot of the Bluenoses believing that they were well and truly back. Three years later and we’re yet to see much more from Rangers, although they’ll be desperate for another Old Firm win this weekend.

The Gers had belief that they were back after that shootout win, and even if they’re still chasing that they’ve got some big moments in them and are capable of being Celtic this weekend.
