Sunderland fans have had it rougher than most English supporters over the last few years. The Mackems have endured double relegations, which we know you don’t like reading as you’ve already had to live it, even if Jack Ross is doing his utmost at ensuring a Championship return. Losing to Bournemouth in April 2017, though, saw them finally drop down from the top flight.

Going to the Stadium of Light throughout the 2016/17 season was not a pleasant experience for many home supporters and it’s not hard to see why. The Black Cats ended the season dead bottom of the Premier League, winning just six times and spending the entire campaign all bar two game weeks in the bottom three. With that in mind, it’s not like relegation came as a surprise.
For a lot of Sunderland supporters, dropping into the second tier could have been taken as a positive considering they’d endured a number of years of battling against the drop without any signing of reaching mid-table. The opportunity to offload Moyes and some deadwood before coming back stronger was there. Unfortunately, we know what actually happened after the first relegation, even if some Mackems were more positive.

The Mackems weren’t all gutted at suffering relegation and were hoping to make it back sooner or later, even if what actually happened was far from that.
