Chelsea supporters in the Transfer Tavern are somewhat underwhelmed at the possibility of signing Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater.
Chelsea’s need for greater squad depth is an issue that has been addressed on countless occasions by Antonio Conte throughout the summer window. Following the permanent departures of Nemanja Matic, Nathaniel Chalobah and opting to loan Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Crystal Palace, the champions’ need for another midfielder is apparent. Despite this need for reinforcement in the midfield, our landlord doesn’t think that Conte should target Danny Drinkwater, rather he should look to exploit his former employers.
Stefano Sturaro has been a Juventus player since 2014, amassing 71 appearances and scoring three goals over the course of the past three seasons. At the age of 24, there is still plenty of time for more refinement and improvement, and perhaps Chelsea would be the ideal destination for the Italian to realise his potential.
The 24-year-old does provide a sense of versatility as he’s able to function as an attacking midfielder or as a more orthodox central midfielder. While aspects of his game do require improvement, his ability to retain possession and contribute to defensive play are particularly noteworthy.
Sturaro has attained the invaluable experience of playing at the highest level, featuring in a team that has enjoyed sustained domestic success. His credentials, potential and expertise certify that he’s a far more lucrative proposition than Danny Drinkwater. The Englishman is, without doubt, a tremendous player, yet Sturaro would provide Conte with greater quality in midfield.
