Glasgow Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has said that Lyndon Dykes could give Steven Gerrard a plan B or plan C – something which he doesn’t have at that moment up front.
The Gers have been linked with a move for the Australian in recent months, with his current club Livingston reportedly looking for a fee of £2m for his services. Gerrard already has Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe at his disposal, who scored 46 goals between them last term, but the latter’s recent hamstring injury could, by the former Liverpool man’s own admission, force the Ibrox outfit into the transfer market.

Writing for The Daily Record, Ferguson said:
“Steven had already spoken about going into the transfer market for a striker anyway and the injury to Defoe might just hasten his activity in that area.
“It will be down to the manager, of course, but I wonder if he’ll look to bring in a different type of frontman, with Defoe and Alfredo Morelos more the wiry and low centre of gravity types?
“Lyndon Dykes has been mentioned and he would definitely bring something different. Yes, he can be an aerial threat, but he isn’t bad with the ball at his feet either.
“The style Steven plays is totally his prerogative but sometimes in this game it pays to have Plans B and C and Dykes may just offer something they don’t already boast in attack.”
Ferguson does make a good point. At 6ft 2in, Dykes is five inches taller than Morelos and seven bigger than Defoe – his height, for a start, offers them something they don’t already have.
As a potential third-choice option, he certainly would bring a new dimension to the Gers’ play, but his goalscoring record indicates that he is not the kind of player Gerrard could rely on to score on a regular basis. He managed 12 goals in all competitions last term, which is his highest ever return – that is some way off the 29 and 17 Morelos and Defoe managed respectively last season.

As such, Gerrard needs to be sure exactly how to use the £428,000-valued 24-year-old – as per Transfermarkt – if he does manage to convince him to move to Glasgow.
