Glasgow Rangers: Gerrard reveals transfer plans

Steven Gerrard has revealed that Glasgow Rangers will look for more firepower up front in the transfer market, as well as some other additions.

The Gers boss was speaking after his side’s 2-0 victory against Nice in the Veolia Trophy, which is their second win in the competition. Jermain Defoe did score in that match, but there have been reports linking Alfredo Morelos with a move away from Ibrox this summer, so new additions in that area of the pitch could be paramount.

Gerrard said:

Hopefully you will see some additions if we can pull off what we are trying to do in the transfer market.

“It was quite evident after the winter break, when we were getting suspensions or Jermain had his injuries, that we lacked a bit of firepower.

“So that is definitely one area we are looking at.

“I don’t want to put a number on it because if we don’t get them in people will maybe say we have failed.

“I don’t think it is the right time to put pressure on the board as they have been very good to me over the last two years.

“But we have targets in certain areas and the idea is to make quality signing that can come in and improve the starting 11.

“It is not about making the squad bigger in terms of numbers.

“We are at a stage where we need quality to make the team bigger.”

The 54-time Scottish champions have already made their mark in the transfer market, bringing in Ianis Hagi, Calvin Bassey and Jon McLaughlin. However, with Gerrard looking for his first trophy since making the move to Glasgow in 2018, he will need more reinforcements to really challenge.

As such, it promises to be a big couple of months for the Gers as they look to strengthen across the board. Ross Wilson has a busy period ahead.
