Football Insider has revealed that Glasgow Rangers believe they can sign Ivan Toney for just £5m this summer.

Toney is one of Peterborough United’s most prized assets, with owner Barry Fry saying that he wants at least £15m for his services (The Daily Mail via The Daily Record).

However, it now appears that the Gers are confident of signing him at just a fraction of that aforementioned price – they believe they can now pay just 33% of what Fry was said to be looking for.

Fry’s valuation of Toney was always absurd – even he will likely know that Posh will not receive a fee anywhere near that if the 24-year-old does leave the club this summer. However, you can’t blame him for looking for the highest price possible – after all, the striker managed 24 goals in 32 League One matches before the campaign was drawn to a premature close, making him the highest scorer in the division.

Of course, those strikes came in the third tier – £5m would still be a substantial fee for a player from that level. Still, there could well be plenty of funds for Steven Gerrard to use during the transfer window – the Gers expect Alfredo Morelos to leave, with them looking for a fee of £15m, whilst they could earn £20m+ all in all from their Europa League campaign.
Toney, therefore, could signify a calculated risk. If he could reproduce the form he managed with Peterborough, he would prove to be an astute signing.
