Glasgow Rangers are starting to look as if they can really put together a strong title challenge this term.
On Wednesday, the Gers won their third game out of three in the Scottish Premiership as they dispatched St. Johnstone 3-0 – that came after wins against Aberdeen and St. Mirren 1-0 and 3-0 respectively. As it stands, they are top of the league and yet to concede a goal, whilst Celtic are five points behind them. Whilst the Bhoys do have a game in hand – their match against St. Mirren was postponed following breaches of the pandemic lockdown and quarantine regulations – it is still a strong lead to possess.

Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Borna Barisic will receive the plaudits for getting their names on the scoresheet, but James Tavernier also deserved plenty of praise for his display. Defensively, the captain looked solid, winning four duels and making two tackles, whilst he was also able to provide an influence at the opposite end of the pitch, completing 89% of his passes, of which three were key.

Tavernier has been somewhat of a scapegoat for supporters in the last couple of seasons, but he showed here that he is an incredibly important player for Steven Gerrard this term – not only as the skipper, but also in terms of his ability. The £4.5m-valued man – as per Transfermarkt – has a big role to play.
