The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story in BILD that claims Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos is a target for The Gunners this summer. Sokratis has been a key feature in the Dortmund defence since he moved from Werder Bremen in July 2013. The Greek colossus is a top defender and could be the key to Arsenal’s defensive fragility in the absence of Laurent Koscielny.

The centre-back could become the first signing at Arsenal in the post-Wenger era, and he’d be a good one. The Greek stopper has amassed an incredible 79 senior caps for the Greek national team and he’s bagged three goals for his country in those games. If the defender does make the move to The Emirates, he would be the perfect partner to Shkodran Mustafi who has been shaky at times this season, in the absence of Koscielny who is set to be out injured until early 2019.
Arsenal’s defensive issues have plagued them for a number of seasons now, with the ageing Petr Cech and error-prone Mustafi and Hector Bellerin bearing the brunt of the fans discontent over the last couple of years. However, the club could do with a marquee defensive signing to cure their woes, much like Virgil van Dijk’s move to Anfield cured Liverpool’s defensive frailties. With Sokratis available to Arsenal for a fee of around £20 million, it’s a no-brainer that the club should look to recruit his services.
