The Diego Costa situation dragged on for much of the summer and the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were not even treated to a resolution.
Indeed, with the punters propping up the bar having to deal with their hero going on strike over in Brazil, the Spaniard’s rather imposing shadow loomed large over Stamford Bridge heading into this new campaign.
Still, a story from Bleacher Report could change everything.
They claim there is a ‘growing feeling’ that the 28-year-old fancies a return to west London and has kept in contact with a number of his team-mates during his time back home in Brazil. Top brass at the club are understood to be keen to bring him back if manager Antonio Conte approves.
While Costa reportedly still does want to return to Atletico Madrid, who see their transfer ban lifted in January, the feeling around the Premier League champions is believed to be that he may return.
Having failed to land either Romelu Lukaku or Fernando Llorente over the course of the summer, the blues in our bar would love to see Costa back, even for six months or so.
Landlord’s Verdict:
Costa, even for six months, could change Chelsa’s season. The idea of him helping Alvaro Morata bed in properly while battling his way to a World Cup spot with the Spanish national side really could improve the Blues’ title chances.
