Have these 5 Chelsea players surpassed expectations this season? We think so…

Chelsea have been nowhere near their best this season, and the Chelsea fans here in the Tavern well and truly know that.

Jose Mourinho was sacked due to their horrendous start and although Guus Hiddink has made the season more bearable, Chelsea supporters are fed up with the whole season entirely.

After being crowned Premier League champions, the Shed End wanted to see Champions League glory again and at the very least, another Premier League trophy and either the FA or Capital One Cup trophy.

However, none of those have been achieved. Key players haven’t produced, costing supporters to question whether the club needs an entire overhaul.

The supporters at the Tavern have called for patience as some players have done enough to keep their jobs at Chelsea.

With that said, Eden Hazard and Oscar won’t be featured in this article; in fact, they are as far away as possible from the article.

Those two disappointments haven’t helped at all this season, but these FIVE players have not only performed brilliantly, but surpass supporters’ expectations…..

Willian

While other creative options have failed, Willian has not.

In big games, Willian has proven what kind of player he has been.

His set piece abilities is arguably the best in the Premier League and when he doesn’t have the ball, he is working hard to support his teammates on the defensive side of the ball. Something that Hazard has seem to forgotten.

With the season having outrageously high expectations, the supporters realized no one truly lived up to them. However, considering all that has occurred this season, Willian has been Chelsea’s best player.

He has made the right flank his own and the Chelsea supporters at the Tavern have applauded him for the type of season he has had when everyone else forgot how to play.

Kurt Zouma

Zouma

It’s a real shame that his season was over because he was having his best season in his career.

He dismantled the partnership of Gary Cahill and John Terry and demanded a place in the side.

His defensive mindset has been missed by the supporters and every Chelsea fan is praying that Zouma will make a speedy yet full recovery.

At 21, his future is bright. Everyone can’t wait to see what the young Frenchman can do for the club.

His pace was meeting the likes of Aguero and Walcott when they would get behind the defenders.

His aerial abilities would welcome Giroud and others. No matter who was playing forward for the opposition, Zouma was up to the test.

Asmir Begovic

When he made the move from Stoke City to Chelsea, many fans questioned the motives of the Bosnian.

However, he has shown why it’s crucial to have two quality keepers.

When Courtois went down with a meniscus tear, Begovic stepped up and play to the best of his abilities.

When goals were conceded, it wasn’t due to his inept abilities; it was due to the lack of consistency of defenders.

With Courtois rumoured to leave, it will be curious to see who will be brought in as a replacement.

Whoever that is, fans at the Tavern are confident that they have solid backup in any scenario. Begovic has surpassed my expectation as what he would be able to do for a big side.

Bertrand Traore

When he was brought into the squad by Hiddink, fans were wondering what he would bring.

He was young and naïve, but everyone knew he had loads of talent.

He has shown the fans at the Tavern what he will bring for the future.

In five Premier League appearances, he has scored two goals. Not bad for someone who is only 20.

With the season being an extreme disappoint, it’s hard to find some positives for the side.

One positive fans have taken is the impact young players like Traore have done for the club.

It will be imperative for the future that these young players continue their early success when the pressure gets bigger.

John Obi Mikel

Mikel

It was hard to find a fifth member of this list.

With that said, Mikel was brought back into the squad by Hiddink and has made a positive contribution.

This very well might be his last season at Stamford Bridge and all the fans at the Tavern hope he can leave on a high note after all he’s done for the club.

He understands his role and with Matic really struggling this campaign, he was able to be a calming influence in the defensive midfielder role.

He does the dirty work and will not command much praise in the press. However, without someone of his quality in the current side, Chelsea could be struggling even more.
