New Queens Park Rangers boss Mark Hughes wants to add Tottenham’s Brazilian shot stopper Heurelho Gomes to his Loftus Road squad according to The Mirror.
Gomes has found first team football hard to come by since the arrival of veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel last summer. A first team regular since his arrival from Holland in 2008, Gomes has dramatically slid down the White Hart Lane pecking order and is now third-choice behind Brad Friedel and former Chelsea ‘keeper’ Carlo Cudicini.
Gomes has admitted at being unhappy at his current situation and with Spurs said to be in the market for Newcastle’s Tim Krul, it seems as if the time has come for the Brazilian to leave the White Hart Lane outfit.
The frustrated Gomes told The People last month “I need to think about a new club because I want to play for Brazil again.”
With the 30 year-old said to be keen to remain in London, QPR appear to be prime candidates with Mark Hughes unsure about his current goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, who was a favourite of previous Rangers boss Neil Warnock, Gomes has emerged as Hughes’ prime target. Once regarded as one of the best ‘keepers’ in Europe while at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, Gomes moved to Spurs in a deal worth around £7million.
Though undoubtedly talented, Gomes’ form for Spurs has been erratic at best with the goalkeeper responsible for a number of high profile gaffs since his arrival in England. QPR are said to be looking to conclude a deal for less than the £7million the Spurs paid for the Brazilian.
Another target for QPR boss Mark Hughes is said to be Spurs’ South African midfielder Steven Pienaar. Rangers have made a formal offer for the versatile midfielder but it has been rejected by the North London club.
The 29 year-old has been linked with a loan move back to Everton where he made over a hundred appearances for the Toffees and was a fans favourite after being named Everton Player of the Season for 2009-2010.
Pienaar, has never managed to hit the heights in which he achieved at Goodison Park, injury problems and the form of Spurs’ other midfielders have meant the former Ajax man has been limited to only five starts since his move to the capital.
Even though only a fringe player at White Hart Lane, manger Harry Redknapp is reluctant to let Pienaar leave. Redknapp stated, “I’d rather have a good squad for the last 18 matches then let one or two go who could play a part in the run-in.”
If Hughes were to be successful in bids for either of these players they would certainly drastically improve the Rangers squad and also greatly enhance Rangers’ chances of survival. These players would provide Rangers with vital Premier League experience and also offer a great deal more quality than is currently on offer at Loftus Road.
