Our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that this current team gel together, in the final few months of the season and finish possibly Arsene Wenger’s final year off in style.

Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since 2004 with that wonderfully famous Invincibles team and, after a run of two League titles in four years prior to that, this 14-year wait is taking its toll on the Gunner fans in the bar.

Le Prof has delivered many an FA Cup trophy and a sprinkle of finals, however, a team of Arsenal standing in the Premier League should have added to their title haul in that time. Wenger is surely desperate to go out on a high and, winning the title would be the ultimate send-off for a manager who’s been at the helm for over 20 years.

Still, if Arsenal really are to challenge once again, Wenger has to become ruthless and chop some of the first team deadwood, our landlord takes a look at two players that should face the axe next season…

Petr Cech

A stalwart of a ‘keeper, Cech is largely experienced in success, having won many titles and trophies while at Chelsea. However, with the clock ticking against him, it may be time for the 35-year-old to be replaced with a younger stopper, such has been the fairly rapid nature of his decline since making the short trip up to north London.

If Wenger is going to leave Arsenal in good shape for the future, then a bright young and high-quality goalkeeper is a must for the summer shopping list, while Cech can still pass on his knowledge.

Danny Welbeck

The former United player hasn’t set the Emirates alight while being at Arsenal, and with the recent new signings, it looks as if Welbeck’s first team action may be reduced further. He’s picked up only a handful of goals and for an attacking player at this level, it doesn’t make for good reading on the stat sheet.

Our regulars think that Welbeck would be better suited to a mid-table team, which would see him flourish and be the star man instead of a squad number and warming the bench a weekly basis.
