Injury setback for Celtic at crucial part of the campaign – Report

Rodgers

Celtic fans here in the Tavern are looking forward to the return of European football, although setbacks could cause for unsettling times at Celtic Park.

Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered a shock defeat at the weekend as Kilmarnock pulled off an inspired 1-0 victory at Rugby Park, with the Hoops now looking to brush the cobwebs off with the return of European football now around the corner. However, a string of injury setbacks has caused for a central-defensive crisis in Celtic, as the new kid on the block will be handed the torch to lead the way for the Hoops. As according to reports in the Scottish Sun, youngster Jack Hendry is set to make his Euro debut against Zenit St Petersburg after a double defensive injury blow.

Brendan Rodgers is facing his first real crisis at Celtic Park, as the Bhoys are in the midst of an injury crisis that’s left them looking worse for wear in the heart of defence. Indeed, in the weekend’s Scottish Premiership clash with Kilmarnock, defensive guardian Dedrick Boyata (groin strain) and Norwegian defender Kristoffer Ajer (ankle injury) were both casualties in a loss that saw insult added to injury. Which has left them both as doubts for their Europa League clash on the 15th of February, although having seen the rise in performance of 22-year-old Jack Hendry there won’t be any hesitation from Rodgers to allow his inclusion in the side.

Indeed, after making the move from Dundee United for £1.5 million he’s already made an immediate impact, after making his debut against Kilmarnock just days after signing for the Hoops. A signing that the Scot perhaps had planned for the future, but now with injuries and ineligibility staking its claim, it looks as if the youth prodigy is set for a first taste of European football.

Landlord’s Verdict:

Dedrick Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer are going to be huge misses for Celtic after becoming an important part of their defence, although Rodgers’ trust in Jack Hendry as a replacement can only mean good things for the Hoops. In a European game against arguably the most difficult team out of Russia, it’s yet to be seen as to whether the youngster’s experience could prove to be the downfall. Nevertheless, a great chance for him to impress in a game that could potentially be a decision-maker in terms of a permanent place in the side.
