The dream really is alive at the moment, isn’t it? Aside from the fact that the Bhoys have been celebrating winning an incredible treble-treble, they still have a lot of work to do. All that is on their minds is winning ten in a row, and with eight of the ten already won, the Hoops could achieve their dream in 2021.
Recently, we’ve seen Neil Lennon come to the club and turn the pressure up on the Hoops ten-fold. Under Brendan Rodgers, the Bhoys were a force to behold in Scotland, yet in the Scottish Premier League after Lennon’s appointment the Parkhead faithful found themselves celebrating just 13 goals in 11 games, and now the crazy decision has been made to offer Lennon the permanent job.
What happens now is up in the air. Peter Lawwell will have to back whoever his new manager is and if that gaffer for the start of the 2019/19 season is Lennon should he take up the contract offer to regain his role as the boss at Celtic then it’s a lot of faith they’re putting in the 47-year-old. There’s something poetic about the idea of Lennon securing ten in a row as he’s the one who started it, but it could backfire.
The Bhoys did extremely well under Neil Lennon the first time around, as you will know, securing their first three titles in the current run of eight in a row. Now he’s been brought back to try and finish the job and secure the last three, but should it fall apart then the decision to bring him in will have to be looked at as the first nail in the club’s coffin, especially if Rangers are the club to deny them.
Rangers continue to chase down the Bhoys to no avail, but if this stagnation continues under Lennon then it surely won’t be long until Steven Gerrard can repeat the feat that Celtic managed in 1998 and prevent ten in a row. Obviously back then it was the Bhoys who stopped Rangers winning ten straight titles, and they’ll be desperate to make sure they don’t falter at the final hurdle now that the shoe’s on the other foot, even if Lennon is almost certainly the wrong man for the job.
