Liverpool fans have been claiming that ‘this year is their year’ every season since the Premier League began back in 1992. However, it simply hasn’t happened for them yet, even when it looks like they simply can’t throw the title away, Re: 2013/14. This season could still see them win the title, but they’d need a real boost in January, and signing Timo Werner could be the boost that they need.
The German striker is one of those who just scores goals. At the age of 22, the RB Leipzig striker has already racked up nine goals in 23 games for his country, with his most recent international goal coming in the form of an absolute stunner against The Netherlands earlier this month. That sort of goalscoring is just what Liverpool could do with too, as they aim to narrow the gap and eventually usurp Man City at the top of the table.
Having a world class striker can be worth 20 points per season. Just look at how Tottenham would get on without Harry Kane for proof of that. So take into account that Werner would easily be able to adapt to life in the Premier League under Klopp and start grabbing goals for fun and then all of a sudden the 25 point-gap between Man City and Liverpool last season looks a lot more manageable.
The Reds have already made Anfield an absolute fortress this campaign and after they added reinforcements all over the pitch over the summer, signing Fabinho and Naby Keita to bolster the midfield, Alisson Becker between the sticks and Xherdan Shaqiri as an extra wide option. Now, if FSG allowed Klopp to go and splash out on Werner, a transfer that would likely cost them similar to the £75 million they splurged on Virgil van Dijk last January, then the Premier League title would be a realistic possibility.
In Timo Werner’s first two Bundesliga seasons with Leipzig, he bagged an obscene 34 goals in 63 appearances. That record is impressive enough as it is, but then when you realise that he’s managed that between the ages of 20 and 22 it takes the German’s ability to another level. When he finally peaks it’s likely that he’ll be one of the best strikers in Europe, and a one-off massive sum to bring him to Anfield will be viewed as an FSG masterstroke if the club does pull it off in January or next summer.
Ever since Klopp allowed Philippe Coutinho to leave Anfield for the Nou Camp almost 12 months ago, the fans have spoken a lot about filling the creative void. However, if the Kopites dropped Roberto Firmino into the ten role and had Werner, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane roaming around ahead of him, it’s hard to see how creating chances and scoring goals would be a struggle for the Anfield side, and they’d surely be too good for even Pep Guardiola’s centurions.
