After years of service in the Premier League for both Arsenal and Chelsea, the time is right for Cesc Fabregas to consider a new move that will benefit his career and the reported idea of joining AC Milan should be deemed perfect for him.
According to Calcio Mercato, the Italian club is keen on strengthening their squad in January after an injury-hit few months that have left Milan in fifth position in the Serie A, already 13 points behind leaders Juventus.
The 31-year-old Fabregas has not formed a huge part of new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri’s plans this season and has mostly featured in the League Cup and Europa League, while mostly being sat on the bench in the Premier League. Fabregas moved to Chelsea in 2014 from Barcelona, much to the anger of Arsenal supporters, and ended up winning the league in 2015 and 2017.
The Spanish World Cup winner’s lack of game-time this season however suggests that a move to Italy could be just what he needs in order to maintain the level of competitiveness that ranked him as one of the most innovative and exciting midfielders in the world at a time.
Milan’s interest in Fabregas could’ve been sparked by former Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis, who recently took up a similar leadership role at the seven-time European champions. The Greek is planning to implement some massive changes at the club by luring new players to the San Siro with the hope of getting them back as one of the top competitors in Italy.
And for Fabregas, that should be the ideal challenge at this stage of his career. The growth and speed of the Premier League at the moment means that a player like Fabregas, who likes to have time on the ball in order to find the perfect pass, could get exploited by opposition teams.
Sarri’s belief in a partnership of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and either Mateo Kovacic or Ross Barkley, suggest that Fabregas’s pace is far off the current teams.
The only reason why the manager might be interested in keeping him at Stamford Bridge is for their playoff matches in the Europa League, as well as the upcoming FA Cup and a possible semifinal in the League Cup. Sorry, but Cesc is too good for that.
